The Challenge

28 States

don’t treat LGBTQ citizens equally. LGBTQ people can be denied housing and refused services based solely on sexual orientation or gender identity.

Housing nondiscrimination laws protect LGBTQ people from being unfairly evicted, denied housing, or refused the ability to rent or buy housing.
Public accommodation nondiscrimination laws protect LGBTQ people from being unfairly refused service or entry to, or from facing discrimination in, places accessible to the public.
Employment nondiscrimination laws protect LGBTQ people from being unfairly fired, not hired, or discriminated against in the workplace by private employers.

The Consequences

Statistically, No Matter How Hardworking, LGBTQ People Still:

  • Experience greater difficulty finding and keeping a job.
  • Receive fewer benefits.
  • Pay more taxes on the same income.

THE POWER OF EDUCATION

We’re making major progress toward securing equal treatment for all. The 6-3 landmark Bostock v. Clayton County case in June 2020 demonstrated that LGBTQ rights transcend ideological divisions, securing employment protections for LGBTQ people in all 50 states.

The work continues for protections in housing and public life. Strategic investments to organize fair-minded Americans, educate the public, and share stories have led to significant progress.

21 states plus D.C. have comprehensive nondiscrimination laws that protect LGBTQ people, including most recently in Virginia.

OUR WORK IN ACTION

Beginning in 2017, GLBTQ Legal Advocates & Defenders (GLAD) and National Center for Lesbian Rights (NCLR) fought the transgender military ban in court, growing public support to 68% of Americans, including 50% of Republicans, through education efforts featuring plaintiffs like Nic Talbott.

In January 2021, the transgender military ban was overturned by President Joe Biden.
